Is the Bible outdated and irrelevant? Well to answer this question that would depend on your definition of outdated and of course if you are asking is the Bible contradictory it can sound like it is BUT I am going to explain why it isn’t.
If by outdated you mean written a very long time ago then sure. I mean there are some things in the Bible that are clearly not the same. We are not all living in huts, we now have electricity, cars, and planes; so if you are looking at the Bible in that since then sure it is outdated. If you are asking is the Bible contradictory because of the old and the new testament then it “can” sound that way but really it’s all rooted in the same truth.
But I assume that this is not what you are talking about. I assume that when you read this post you wanted to know is the Bible outdated in terms of what you should believe and what you should be following. The short answer is no the Bible is not outdated because God is always the same.
1. Is The Bible Contradictory?
First, you do have to realize that the Bible was written by men. It is not like God himself came down a penned down the Bible. So of course when you get confused about the conflicting accounts then understand that people are imperfect. Mark may have mentioned something and John may have mentioned something else. But that does not mean it is outdated, that just means what they wrote is just different accounts of what they experienced.
But no the Bible is not outdated in the sense that God is the same and the instruction in it is the same. And the way to understand the Bible, of course, is to use the Holy Spirit to help you discern what God is trying to tell you through the Bible, as it was written so long ago. The Bible has a way too much information about diet and other life advice that is relevant today to be outdated.
That is why when you read the Bible it is important not just to read but to understand otherwise you may think that it is irrelevant. The Bible is a living document and if you subscribe to my YouTube channel (click here) then you will see regular videos where I give Bible-based teachings and apply it to your everyday life. And that is the point of the Bible to make the information applicable to your life now to invoke change in it. Let’s get deeper into this. But don’t forget to check out my video on the difference between the old and the new covenant. It will give you the basic answer to is the Bible contradictory.
2. Is the Bible Outdated And Irrelevant? No, Because God Knows Everything
When you think about is the Bible contradictory then know that God knows al. I do not care if we are in 1855 or 2755 there is nothing that God does not know, did not know, and would not know in the future. Often time’s people try to make God a human by saying how could God possibly know, today’s day and age. Or technology. So you think that humans can better understand these things over God? No. Just as the Bible verse says:
That which has been is that which will be [again], And that which has been done is that which will be done again. So there is nothing new under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:9
As the Bible was written so long ago by men if you remember of course they are not going to include the exact things that apply to life now because what exists now did not exist then. But through the discernment of the Holy Spirit, the information is the same. This is why it is important to take the information that the Bible is trying to teach you because there is nothing new under the sun.
And GOD KNEW THIS. God knew what He was doing and that is why when Jesus died He gave us the Holy Spirit (click my blog here to find out more on that). The Holy Spirit is what we carry with us in order to govern our own behavior and to have a relationship with what God is telling us. Telling you how to apply the Bible to your life, how to interpret scripture, and so on and so forth.
For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21
The Bible could NOT go on forever. Of course, we should read the Bible but more than anything we have the Holy Spirit to lead and direct us in our everyday life. The same Holy Spirit that was in those who wrote the Bible lives in you. So even if you cannot find a Bible passage about sexting, the Holy Spirit is there to give you advice and to also show you scripture relevant to sexting and guide you on what to do. Just an example.
3. Is the Bible Outdated And Irrelevant ~ Is The Bible Contradictory?
(The Old versus The New Testament)
If you are a Christian and you were to just read the Old Testament and not the New Testament then you may be really confused about what exactly is going on. Why is it so different? Why is God so different? None of this makes sense. But that is just it, it does? In the Old Testament, when you sinned, instead of praying for forgiveness you would probably go kill a lamb, burn it, and go sacrifice it to God.
God would just kill people for sinning but in the New Testament, He is so forgiving. And Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice so now we do not have to kill animals. And who is this Jesus person? Why is He the ultimate lamb? You can watch my video below to explain the trinity because this is the key to understanding the link between the old and the new testament. And understand how even though these two books seem so different, the Old seems outdated from the new, it really is not. 4. Is the Bible Outdated And Irrelevant ~ What About The 10 Commandments
Is the Bible contradictory and what about the 10 commandments? Yes the 10 commandments are in the Old Testament and I know you are saying to yourself well Sophia if the 10 commandments are in the Old Testament and we are now following the New Testaments then why do I have to follow the 10 Commandments that are in the Old Testament.
The Ten Commandments still stand but in the New Testament Jesus simplified them AND He added on to them so that no matter what year you are living in you know what rules to follow and it makes it simple. Because everything that happens cannot just fit into the 10 commandments. But moving forward in the future Jesus made it very easy so that if you are confused about what you should be doing and if it does not fit into the 10 commandments then you just have to remember two things.
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, Of all the commandments, which is the most important?
The most important one, answered Jesus, is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:28-31
In other words, Jesus was saying that all the 10 commandants fit into these two categories. The 10 commandments are still relevant but so that people do not continue to try to dissect things as time goes by and argue over what is and is not sinful (as they did in the New Testament with Jesus). Jesus just made it easy, love God with all of your heart. Knowing that when you do God will help guide you through the direction of the Holy Spirit. Which you can watch my video down below on how to hear from God so you can learn how to hear from the Holy Spirit.
And to love those like yourself, and He was saying that even when the 10 commandments were created that is what God had in mind. So now moving forward no matter what situation, when you are thinking about doing something just love God and He will tell you what to do and do not do anything to anyone else that you would not want done to yourself.
The main reason why people want to know is the Bible contradictory is because they want to know what they should and should not be doing and what is sinful and what is not sinful. So, in short, we must know that the Old Testament is old and written in a time in which situations in the Bible were easily applicable.
But as the New Testament came, Jesus came (the link between the old and new testament) and He made things a lot clearer for moving forward into the future. This is why it is very important to try to read the Bible in its entirety to get a full understanding of how it is not outdated. Picking a scripture here and there will not help you see the bigger picture.
