The top question that I get as a single mom momtrepreneur is how do you do it and when do you have time to do it? When I tell people that I am running a blog, building a brand, writing course, and writing an e-book; they look at me like I am some unicorn from the magical island called work yourself like a slave.

And that I must be working myself like a slave if I have time to do all of that.  I am not going to lie to you, becoming momtrepreneur and starting your own business as a single mom is HARD but it is also doable AND so worth it in the end. And the more progress you make and the stronger your brand is, guess what? You will have more free time to do what you want and you can be in charge of making your own money and joining the momtrepreneur club.

And because seeing is believing I want to start with actual single momtrepreneurs who succeeded under crazy circumstances and how they did it.  If it can happen to them, then why not you? Also check out my blog read about the day I became a full time momtrepreneur by clicking here.

How to start your own business ~ Sarah Titus

Her  income report stated that she makes over 200K- 400k in a month. (Crazy right). And this was after she was left by her husband and had to live in a homeless shelter.  Once she vowed to be a mompreneur she made 6 figures her first year.

When she started her channel she was living with her mom, she quickly grew and now has a BOMB house on her own.  And because we are all about generational wealth, her daughter also has a channel.  Can’t say I blame her.

If you watch her story it was not easy and yeah she has some legit struggles, but once she got through them it was worth it.  You should watch her movie for some inspo (click my affiliate here).  And what she did, was that she just so happen to invent everyday household products that helped other mothers.  You can also get her book, Inventing Joy: Dare to Build a Brave & Creative Life by clicking here.

How to start your own business & Become A Momtrepreneur ~ What’s My Point

If you want to know how to start your own business then notice this. If you notice all of the above single mom momtrepreneur have literally started a business wherever they can fit in by using what is already what was within them AND their struggles as a single mom is what made them PUSH to be a momtrepreneur and that was their motivation. And the best thing is the internet that was invented so that you can start your own business from anywhere, doing anything, without investing alot of money. BUT it does require time.

So when I talk about making time to start your own business, it can be anything that you want it to be, anything you are good at, and anything you feel gifted to do.  If your momtrepreneur  business is trying to be an Instagram model (a classy one I hope) or become a CEO of your own company, in this day and age it is all business, they both will make you money. Also, check out my video below on how to find your God given purpose and make money from it and don’t forget to click here to subscribe to my channel.

BUT you will still have to be intentional about it. Any business requires the same amount of work as any other job and in most cases more work than your regular job especially in the beginning. No one just woke up with day after doing no work whatsoever with a successful business. And as a single mom myself I hear so many other single moms complain about what they can’t do and what they don’t have time for.

But if you want some honestly that type of mentality will get you no where and full of failure.  If you want to be a momtrepreneur then you have to be the single mom that does it all, you HAVE to be and not doing means that you are accepting that you will not be successful.

How To Start Your Own Business ~ Stop With The Excuses

And I already know what you are saying. “But Sophia who has time for all of that:”

  • You are a single mom and you have to kids to take care of.
  • You cannot just up and quit your job while you start your own business because you have kids to take care of.
  • You are always exhausted and do not feel like doing anything because you have kids to take care of.

I get it!

As a single mom, who has had a full-time job, and who has my own business ( aka this blog you are reading and my YouTube channel, on top of all the products I put out click here) I know exactly how you feel. But, either you want it bad enough or you don’t. And yes, it is work but here are some tips that will make it easier.

1. How To Start Your Own Business ~ You HAVE to Want It.

You cannot just hope that it may happen or wish for it to happen. No, you have to want it.  In those times where you are tired and do not feel like working, the only thing that is going to pick you up off the ground and MAKE you get done what you need to get done for your business is your DESIRE.

A desire to have more money, a desire not to be a stereotype, a desire to make life better for yourself and your child and to not be the single mom stereotype. You can check out my video below to see some of the situations that I went through in the coperate world that pushed me into wanting to work for myself.  I was tired of other people controlling my money, how much I made, and throwing being a single mom in my face as an excuse to try to make me work overtime or like a slave for a company I did not even own.  That was my PUSH.

The fact that you want it means you are willing to go without sleep, willing to skip out on the club, or willing to not go out as much. That is your PUSH, that is the sacrifice you must make in order to get what you want. If you think about how much random stuff you do, you can be using that time to work on your business.  No, it is not desirable for people who do not want it bad enough.  When you really want it, that means you are really willing to work at it, AND that means that you will NOT make excuses why you can’t.

2. How To Start Your Own Business ~ You Have Good Time Management

When we talk about good time management skills at the very least you should know what you are going to do every single day AND you should make sure you do it every single day, no matter what.

As part of my business.  My goals for the day usually look like this

  • Take a Picture for Instagram –> follow me here by the way. (To manage this I must get up early, dress up, put on a full face of makeup, and take at least 10 pictures, in a room with great lighting AND THEN edit that picture, post it to the gram, and look up relevant hashtags for the image). Legit I create a full photoshoot in my house.  See below an example.
Actual Instagram picture where I get ready in my house to take photos for my brand. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram. Click the picture.
  • Post a Blog (To manage this, I must plan ahead what I am going to write about. Research keywords. Write the blog to incorporate SEO, pick out images, create a pin for my blog, and promote my blog on all my social media avenues).
  • Check and answer relevant emails.
  • Shoot videos from my YouTube channel, normally I will shoot 3 a day so that I can put them out during the week.
  • Engage in Social Media
  • Work On My Product (This can be different and change depending on the time.  Sometimes I am working on my e-book, a course, or a free product to offer on my site.  If you are new to my site you probably saw a pop up asking you to join my email list (called Sophie-stication Nation which you can join here by the way) often times I create a freebie to welcome new people).
  • Work On My Newsletter that I send out to my email subscribers.

This list can be longer depending on the day AND can take 8 hours or more sometimes. So why am I saying all this? I am trying to PROVE a point.  At the very LEAST these are the things I need to do to keep my business afloat.  If they are not done because I run out of time, then my business suffers.

So what you need to do for your business is write out your goals, come up with a list of what you need to do everyday and what time you need to have each thing done by. That way you can know how much progress you are making and if you are maximizing your time to the best of your ability.

The way that I get all these things done is to make a schedule every week on what I need to do each day, what time I want to finish each thing by, and then I FINISH IT.  No matter what. Staying up late or getting up early, if need be to complete it. If you have poor time management you are going to feel like a chicken with your head cut off. Always running behind, feeling like you are not getting anywhere in your business, and feeling like you never have enough time. And that would be fact, you won’t get anywhere in your business.

You have to learn how to maximize the free time you do have, and wake up earlier, and go to bed later if need be.  Especially if you have a full time job, click here to read my blog how to managing building a business while having a full time job. When you practice good time management then you tend to finish things when you say you are going to finish them because you have to show up for your business on a consistant basis.  Not being a consistant is a sure way to not build a business.

Once you are able to finish everything on your to-do list for that day, then as a head start you can get started on the next day’s stuff so you will have less to do that day. That is when you start to actually make progress in your business because you are meeting your goals and your deadlines as opposed to running around in a big circle and not knowing what your goals are and never reaching them.

3. Becoming A Single Mom Momtrepreneur ~ Do What You Can When You Can

The main thing that keeps me updated on building my own business and what helped me to become a momtrepreneur is that I use all my free time to get things done on my to-do list.  When I was working a full time job and I had a lunch break or free time, then I am working on my blog.

After I finish getting ready in the morning and I have that extra 45 minutes before I have to leave for work then I am doing things for my blog. I utilize all of my free time during the day to get things done that I need to get done.  That way I am not doing a whole bunch of work at night when I get home NOR am I falling behind on the things I need to get done.  You would be surprised and how taking 30 minutes here or an hour there is effective when starting your own business.

One of the best advice was what I read from Color Me Courtney which I saw her at the Blogher conference, and she gave the following advice about how she made time to start her blog.  In her post, which you can read here she said the following:

Towards the end, I was making more only blog than my full-time job and ultimately decided to leave it to pursue Color Me Courtney full time. It wasn’t easy, my days started around 5 or 6 am editing and publishing CMC content before heading to work, I would still spend my lunch hour working on social and then spend 7-1AM every evening attending events, answering emails, working on pitch decks and planning future content. On the weekends I would shoot all of my content and get organized for the week to come. It was one of the hardest years of my life, but also the most fun.

Now she is not a mom but the same thing applies.  You have to find a way to work on your business around your schedule and noticed the highlighted quote.  In the end she made more from her blog then her full time job AND that is the goal.  So managing your kids, work, home, and business is going to be hard but it is worth it when you get the reward you seek that is the key to becoming a momtrepreneur.  Also check out my video below where I talk about my journey.

5. How To Start Your Own Business ~ Do It Right

This is something that I wrote about in my hard work will pay off only if you do it right blog.  This is a lesson that it took me a LONG time to get.  The fact of the matter is that this not my first blog.  It is my second and my first one was a HOT MESS I thought just because I was working on it and doing it that it was satisfactory.  I was working on it but the quality of the work was terrible.  The end result was me creating a new blog because that one sucked, doing all that work over again, AND then some.  And even on this blog where there are things that are sloppy I have to go back and re-do them.

I made excuses that because I was a single mom that what the subpar work that I was doing was enough and that posting whenever I felt like it was enough. It wasn’t. Because your clients, fans, readers, buyers or whoever do not care about your personal life.  They care about buying, supporting, and following a quality business that stands out from the rest.

What I learned is to get it right the first time.  Yes, it may take longer to be more diligent in whatever task you are doing for your business.  But it is 10 times better than having to go back and redo the same task over and over again because it was not right the first time. If when I started my blog 6 years ago the way that I do it now, I would be a lot further, this is a fact that haunts me all the time. This is why when I do something, I do it well, and not do something just to check it off my list and it is done poorly just to say that I did it, and use my responsibilities as a single mom as an excuse for not doing my best.

6. A True Momtrepreneur  Knows How To Find Her Passion & Work Hard

As I said in my how to be successful blog, the secret to success is not really a secret.  If you look around at the most of the successful business owners or even if you look at the single moms that I talked about at the beginning of this post, they ALL took something they were good at, something they knew a lot of about, and they started a business on it.  When you are starting your own business you need to be passionate about it, because you are going to be working on it a lot.  It is hard to make time to do something if you do not actually like doing it. Here is another quote from the Color me Courtney article.

If you don’t find yourself wanting to put in an unnatural amount of time into your blog, then I’m not sure its the job for you. Even now I average 80 hour work weeks and rarely get a day off, I wouldn’t change it or ever complain, but its important to know that this isn’t a normal 9-5.

When it comes to my blog, how much I write for my blog, and how much I do for my blog it can add up easily to over 40 plus hours a week. BUT it never seems like work because I enjoy it and I like doing it. Now that is just me, you do not have to work over 40 hours or over 80 hours, plenty of people don’t.  You can read this book called The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (click to buy) in which it is about how the author went from $40,000 per year and 80 hours per week to $40,000 per month and 4 hours per week. What I will say that this 4 hour work week may come more so into play once your business is established and not at the start where more work is required.

Which is what you must always remember, yes being a single mom and wanting to become a momtrepreneur is hard at first. Alot of juggling and hard work, but how bad do you want it.  How bad do you want the life and the money to get the life that you deserve.
