In this post I am going to teach you how to read the Bible and most importantly the key to understanding the Bible. Because what is the point of reading anything if you cannot understand it? And I know what you may be thinking, that you go to church and there is no real reason for you to know how to understand the Bible because your pastor can teach it to you.
And that is where you would be WRONG. The whole point of this Christianity thing is for God to connect with us on a deeper level, hence the whole point of the Holy Spirit. Which I have a video on that you can watch down below and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel by clicking here.
And besides, I have personally went to church and they have taught the Bible all wrong. And you may be thinking that they are ordained and I am just a person and what do I know about if they are teaching the Bible right or wrong. Which brings me back to my original point. BECAUSE I READ THE BIBLE! And that is why I feel that it is necessary for each Christian start reading and understanding the Bible on their own as well. And before I get into how to read the Bible, it is important for you to understand why it is so important.
1. How to Read the Bible & Why You Need To Learn This Skill
So that when you go to church you know if what they are teaching you is from the Bible. Just because they are speaking in the church does not mean that they are 100% right or that they cannot be mistaken. They are human after all and no humans are 100% right all of the time. Even in Christianity.
This is what the LORD Almighty says: Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. Jeremiah 23:16
Meaning there are plenty of people out there claiming to be Christians, godly, or pastors and they are out here leading people astray.
How to Read The Bible ~ Case in point:
I was once visiting a friend’s church and midway though the church the pastor began to “see visions” and call people up to the alter telling them bad things were going to happen to them unless they gave an offering. Then she literally had an auction in the middle of the church. She told people if they could give $300 they would be blessed and then when not enough people stood up it went down to $200, then $100, and heck it may have even when down to a penny (not really that is an exaggeration but you get it).
2. How To Read The Bible ~ What’s my point.
My point is that I never went to that church again because I knew my Bible and the Bible specifically says.
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:3-4
So if she, as the pastor, did not know this Bible verse and that God wants all giving to be in secret and most importantly did not know what she was doing was wrong, then certainly I did not need to follow her to the path of never never land because she was not teaching her congregation properly. It seemed more like a scam. And I know you may be thinking that I am being judgmental but it is our responsibility to test the people that we are allowing to preach over us. Which brings me to my second point.
- Reading The Bible Teaches You Who To listen To I know you may be thinking that we should not judge people and you are right kind of sort of, because we should judge people based on the fruit they bear (if you do not know what I am talking about then click here). And the Bible clearly tells us to:
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God 1 John 4:1-2
In other words how can you test people to see if they come from God, if you yourself have no understanding of the Bible, which is why it is important to learn how to read the Bible. Which brings me to my third point.
- How To Read The Bible ~ Reading The Bible Helps You be responsible for your own salvation. You can go to church, be a good person, get baptized, or do everything that you think you are supposed but unless you are actually connected with God on your own then you are not really a Christian. For the Bible says:
Many will say to Me on that day, ˜Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, ˜I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness! Matthew 7:23
Meaning that there are going to be a whole lot of people disappointed when they get to heaven because if you read the Bible verse above, it appears as if the people were Christian and they did works of a Christian but they really did not know God. Which brings me to my last point.
- How To Read The Bible ~ Reading the Bible helps you get to know God. How can you get to know God if you do not even know what God says? Have you ever heard of that acronym for the Bible. Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth? That is what the Bible is an instruction manual from God to you and as you read the Bible you will be more in tune with the Holy Spirit, you will be able to talk to God more, and God will tell you what you need to know as it pertains to your life as you read the Bible. For the Bible clearly states:
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8
At this point you may be wondering how I can come up with a Bible verse that can back up each one of my points that I have just mentioned above and that is because I READ MY BIBLE and therefore I know what God wants from me and what I am telling you is the same things that God told me. Now, on to the main reason why you came to this post, let me teach you how to read the Bible let’s get into it shall we? (post contains affiliate links)
3. How To Read The Bible ~ Get One You Understand
It is not really going to help you (especially as a beginner) to pick up and read an old century King James version of the Bible. Unless you want to read, a bunch of art thou and come-hithers then you may be confused about what you’re reading. In that case you will be so focused on trying to look up the meaning of the words and not focusing on what you should be focusing on, which is getting your own meaning from what you are reading. I am going to list some of my suggestions for easy to read Bibles that to be very helpful when learning to read the Bible.
- How to read the Bible ~ New international version bible (NIV) The NIV is the most widely used contemporary English Bible. - How To read The Bible ~ Amplified version. This Bible is a favorite of Joyce Meyers herself and the reason being is because. The purpose of the Amplified Bible is to reveal any other clarifying meanings from the original languages that may be concealed by the traditional translation method. (source). This Bible goes above and beyond in over explaining every verse and word.

4. Learn How To Read The Bible By Getting A Bible That Pertains To You
Apart of the reason why I learned how to read the Bible so well and have read the entire thing is because the interest started when I was a teen. And the way my interest got peeked is that someone from my church gifted me a teen Bible and it was the most amazing thing EVER. It made sense to me and it also added additional commentary on how the verses actually applied to my life. I literally would just read it and read it because I understood it, it made sense, it was entertaining, and the additional questions that I answered really made me try to interpret what I had just read.
Below are some suggestions on specific Bibles that pertains to you. Some of the women’s Bible’s are amazing as some of them focus on hope, transformation, and thoughts for everyday life. I know what you may be thinking, aren’t all Bible supposed to say the same thing? Yes, they do. But just as I mentioned above with my teen story Bible on top of the actually Bible verses, there is more commentary, and feedback to give you a better understanding of the Bible as many of them have specific questions of how what you area reading actually applies to you.

5. Learn how to read the Bible By Starting From the Beginning
I know that the Bible can seem overwhelming and a lot of times we just want to skip and rummage through random Bible verses that only apply to us and make us feel good. And even though there is nothing wrong with that some of the time that is not a real way that will teach you how to understand the Bible. You would never pick up a book and just start from the middle, picking random pieces out of it, and say you know the entire story.
Just like if you were to start watching the middle of a movie then you really would not understand what it is about. It is the same way with the Bible. I know that the Bible is long, it has separate books in them, and you may feel like you can just read a book or just read the New Testament, read them out of order and that may give you some understanding but NOPE it won’t. The full understanding from the Bible comes when you actually start from the beginning.
How To read the Bible ~ Case in point
Case in point on how to read the Bible me. I used to be one of those people who use to know verses here and there and then God just convicted me to start to read the Bible from the beginning. So literally, I started from Genesis chapter one verse one and started reading from there. And I loved it. The Bible really came to life for me and it made me have new eyes for the new testament and a new understanding of God. You will get so much more value if you really just start to read the Bible from the beginning. Trust me.
6. Learn How Read The Bible By Actually Focusing On The Bible
Remember when you are learning how to read the Bible this should be like an actual counseling session between you and God. The reason why I put it like that is because you two are focused on one another, you are focused on reading, and hearing God’s word. God is giving to you and telling you what you need to go forward in life and solve your problems. It can be very hard to do that if you are too busy focusing on something else. Check out the following Bible verse:
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:6
You do not literally have to go into a closet, but you should go into a quiet place, free of distractions to really meditate and focus on reading the Bible and really focus on getting something from it. Reading the Bible is only part of it. Your goal should not be just to read some words off a page. Anyone can do that, but your goal is to actually understand it and have it enrich your life. If you do not like to read, you can listen to the Bible.
And you can do it for free! My favorite app is called the Bible app. The Bible app has tons and tons of translations. This can be really helpful if you have a long commute to work, if you are taking a walk, or if you have sometime to yourself and you want to listen to something. It is a lot easier to read the Bible or listen to the Bible through a portable device that way you can take it with wherever you go and listen to it on your downtime at work or while on your breaks. And besides once you really get into reading the Bible you will see there are some really scandalous stories in the Bible. Which I have a video on a few of them below.
7. Learn How To Read The Bible By Meditating and Taking Notes
The next tip on how to read the Bible is to take notes. This is the most important. When you read the Bible, do just that. Read it, absorb it, allow God to speak to you through it and tell you want it means. Do not set out and read 100 pages in a day and when you stop reading you did not get anything from it. That defeats the purpose of the Bible remember what I told you early on in this post? It is okay if you read a few pages and take notes on what you learned and you can apply it to your life than if you read 200 pages in a day and learn nothing..
Which is why it is important to take notes or to keep a journal. Even if when you are mediating and praying over the word something may not click with you at that very moment or some thing may click with you and you need to write it down so you don’t forget. So taking notes on verses that stand out to you can be helpful so that when you do get meaning you can write them down. And also, as you read the Bible having something to refer back to as you progress in your Bible reading can really help you retain information.
8. How To Read The Bible ~ Learn To Read The Bible By Re-reading The Bible
The last tip that I want to bring up when how to read the Bible is that there have been times where I have read the Bible, got completely lost and had to flip back and re- read what I just read. There have been times where I have read over a verse multiple times so that I can get a full understanding of it.
There are times where I have read a verse, looked up the meaning of the verse, and then come back and read the verse again. My point there is no rush to just finish the Bible in record time. There is nothing wrong with re-reading parts that you have read and sometimes it is necessary. Even though it may not be faster it will help you in the long run because it will increase your understanding.
Alright, so these are my top tips about learning how to read the Bible like a boss and I am sure that you will be reading, understanding, and quoting the Bible in no time. If you know someone who wants to learn how to start reading the Bible, even if they are a beginner then go ahead and share this post with them. And last but not least I have something for you.
