In this post, I want to talk about some amazing solo travel ideas that also will not cost you an arm and a leg and you can still have an expensive experience. Traveling alone can be intimidating. I remember that I used to be so freaked out about traveling alone because I thought that someone would kidnap me or I would not meet anyone and I would be stuck sitting by myself looking all lonely and whatnot.
But then I did travel alone. I remember when I took my first solo staycation (click here to read) I had so much fun, met so many people, that I realized my fear of traveling alone was really silly. From my experience when you travel alone you are more likely to put yourself out there and meet new people than you are when you are with a group.
Another tip for traveling alone is that you can do what you want to do when you want to do it. You do not have to get up at a certain time just because other people want you to and you can choose anywhere that YOU want to go, where you want to stay, how much money you want to spend, and you do not have to worry about if other people will like it or not.
When you travel alone, solo travel is all about you and doing what makes you happy. That is why in this post I am going to give you some amazing solo travel ideas, places to travel alone, and tips and tricks to make your travel alone vacation fun.
Are you ready? Let’s get into it. But first, you may want to watch my video for more tips on how to put yourself out there and be social, even if you are alone. Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel by clicking here.
#1 How To Travel Alone ~ Solo Travel Ideas ~ Prepare For Your Trip
First, you want to figure out where you are going and what you are going to do there. The last thing you want to do is to pick somewhere OFF season and spend your whole vacation inside because it is hurricane season or something crazy.
And the last thing you want to do is to get to a vacation spot and be at a loss on what to do and how to get around. Therefore, you actually want to research! Do they have a high crime rate? What side of town should you stay on? Do people have a habit of going there and never being seen or heard from again?
A budget-friendly tip is that you actually want to look at places to go that are free. Such as museums and or parks. Also, map out restaurants that you want to go to. Look at their menus to give you an idea of how much you are looking to spend when eating out.
When You’re Traveling Alone Things To Remember:
A great website to research places are:
- Trip Advisor– They are honest reviews from real-life people, oftentimes which pictures, that way you know what you are getting into and how much it to vacation at a certain spot.
- Google Reviews: Once you find restaurants, museums, or places you want to visits look at the reviews to see if it would be worth your time.
Once you decided on a place, tell people where you are going and where you are staying. That way in case something bad happens, people can tell the police your last known whereabouts. You may laugh but I am so serious.
Now, enough with the morbid stuff.
The next preparation you want to make for your trip is what you want to see and how you are going to get around. If you are not driving and do not want to rent a car, the last thing you want is to be stuck in your room with no way to get anywhere if you go to a destination where there is no public transit or things are not easy to walk to.
A budget-friendly tip is to make sure they have things within walking distance so that you can save on transportation even somewhere with a public transit system is ideal.
As someone who was apprehensive about traveling alone, I know that not everyone is on the same level for solo travel. Some people may want to stay in their own backyard, some people want to stay within their own country, and some people won’t just take an international trip alone.
So I am going to give you some ideas for places you can travel alone. AND you can even feel free to work your way up when you get more comfortable. You may want to go on a trip you can drive to at first and work up to an international trip. So no matter what your fancy is I have you covered.
Traveling Alone Solo Travel Location #2 Rent a Cabin
If you really want it to be a solo trip and not really be bothered by anyone, you can try renting a cabin in the woods or the mountains. If you are really want to tough it out then you can actually go camping in a tent and everything. You can also find cabin rentals online or you can check state or county parks as they often rent out cabins and camping groups and are more affordable.
This is ideal for people who want solo travel and just want to be alone with themselves and their own thought. Also, ideal for introverts who get really bothered by large groups of people. This is also a solo trip that is not going to be as expensive. And a bonus if you pick somewhere close enough that you can drive so you can save on plan cost.
For places to visit in the mountain or national parks:
- Smokey Mountains
- Grand Canyon
- Rocky Mountains
- Yosemite
- Yellowstone
Traveling Alone Solo Travel Location #3 The beach
The beach can be an isolated location or a place to meet people depending on where you want to go. If you choose a resort in a major tourist area then expect a more crowded beach. This is a great option if you want to meet people are if you want to be solo.
Depending on the experience you want will determine where you are going to go. For example, I went to South Beach for Christmas (see my blog here) it was not a solo vacation but it is very busy and you will always have something to do and people to meet. See my son’s vlog for our family trip to Myrtle Beach.
Some beach ideas you want to go to:
- Ocean City Beach Maryland
- South Beach
- The Outer Banks
- Hawaii
- The Caribbean
- Myrtle Beach
- Venice Beach
Travel Alone Solo Travel Ideas #4 Try All-Inclusive
If you want to be worry-free and ready to mingle, then you can try an all-inclusive deal. All-inclusive means that you can eat as much as you want or drink as much as you want and it is included. These types of deals are normally at resorts, especially in the Caribbean and other high tourist tropical places.
This can be good because typically these types of resorts have parties and other activities you can do on-site. And some resorts even specialize in single people, which is ideal if you are looking to meet someone or have a lot of activities to do.
Ideas for All-Inclusive Trips Are
- Bahamas
- Jamaica
- Mexico
Travel Alone Solo Travel Ideas #5 A Cruise
A cruise is also a good worry-free planning option and also very safe too and they can be VERY affordable as in a few hundred bucks for the entire thing. AND that includes food. The ship keeps track of when you exit and return on the boat. So if something happens to you they are aware right away. I know I keep bringing up this you may disappear theme. But it is better to be safe than sorry.
Many cruises are somewhat all-inclusive which means that food is included but you usually have to pay for drinks. It is also a great way to meet people as there are many on-ship activities and you get to book offshore excursions as well.
Plus you are not staying in one place and it gives you the chance to see many locations on one trip. Depending on your location, they also have a cruise to nowhere. This means that you stay on a ship for two days and just set sail in the ocean. You never get off the boat but just enjoy the activities on the ship.
Traveling Alone Solo Travel Ideas #6 Why Not Stay Where You Are
I live in the DC area and there is so much stuff to do right here because I live in a big metro city. Ideally, all you have to do is just get a hotel stay for the weekend and go out during the day or even evenings.
This is really ideal for people who are just starting out traveling alone and want to get their feet wet. If you do not like it, are not having fun, or you just want to go home; you can. Because you really don’t live that far from where you are going.
Traveling Alone? #7 Go To A Big Tourist Spot
If your goal is to meet people or to see a lot of popular tourist scenes. Then go to a heavily populated city or tourist spot. And stay where all the fun is. For example, when I went to New York (click my blog here) I stayed within walking distance to Time Square, which is a heavy tourist place. I also went to New Orleans, during Essence Fest and it was a lot of people and a lot of things to do. Tourist spots are ideal for people who want to stay busy. There will always be something to do and there will always be people to meet.
Some of the better suggestions for tourist spots include:
- New York
Washington DC - Las Vegas
- Miami
- Orlando Florida (Click to see my blog here)
- Grand Canyon
- Niagara Falls
#8 Additional Resources When For When You’re Traveling Alone
If you are choosing to travel alone you may be on a tight budget, maybe looking for travel deals, or you may be looking for deals on locations and events you can go to once you get to your designated location. Don’t worry, as someone who is super frugal I have some wonderful resources for you.
- AirBnB– This is an option for all budgets. It is where people rent out their homes to you from all over the world, and you stay in their home while on vacation. If you want to save money this is a good option. And if you want privacy this is a good option. You can rent a room, an apartment, or even a house if you wanted to.
- Groupon– If you are looking for any type of deal. No matter if it is all-inclusive, cabins, beaches, restaurants, no matter what; they always have them listed.
- Amtrak- They have really good deals that you can take a train cross country or you can buy a ticket that will allow you to have multiple stops and various destinations. This is ideal for people who may want to save money or to stop at more than one place during their solo vacation. You can stop at three locations on Amtrak and stay overnight at each location given you a chance to explore more cities.
- Bus: I actually took my first long-distance trip on a bus to a blog conference (click here). And even though it was not the most comfortable it was still a way to get there and saved me money.
These are some amazing solo travel ideas and they are not going to cost you an arm and a leg to do. PLUS they are great options for anyone no matter what your solo travel comfort level is, no matter where you are, and no matter where you want to go. If you know someone that needs some solo travel tips them feel free to share this post with them.
If you are a single woman and you are out here living your best life or at least you want to. Then consider getting my book for single women (Fix It Jesus For Single Women Only) click here to buy.
A solo trip to the mountains sounds fantastic right now!
I moved across country on my own, but have never taken a vacation by myself. I think going on a cruise would be a great place to start!
Cool tips 🙂 How do you leave your belongings on the beach while traveling alone? I mean if you go swimming there is a high chance you might get robbed 🙁
I wouldn’t bring anything to the beach that is valuable since I don’t have anyone to watch it while I was swimming.
Oh I think I’d go all inclusive!! Or find a friend to come with me!
Headed to Alaska in June for some great outdoor fun.
I loved going on trips alone. A lot of people won’t do it but I actually wrote a post about how good it is for you and how you meet new people and actually get to do what you want to do because you aren’t trying to please anyone else.
I think I’d be to scared to go anywhere by myself, but kuddos to those independent women who can! Great advice in this post. Maybe someday I’ll be brave enough to take the leap. A cozy mountain cabin does sound nice! 🙂
I’ll be scared to go travelling solo. This is such an inspiring post and great tips. If I do go travelling, I think I’ll still have to tag a good friend to go with me hahaha!
Wonderful challenge Sophie! Sounds awesome 🙂
Great trips. I’ll be going on a solo overnight trip soon. This is full of great tips!
I never had the chutzpah to travel on my own before motherhood and now, I can’t imagine leaving my little one long enough to travel on your own. I do like that you thought of all the details down to the weather.
I admire anyone who has the guts to travel on their own, I think it would give me so much anxiety. I also think its nice to share the experience with someone.
I think it would be kind of intriguing to go out by myself but I would need to go on a cruise or a resort to make some of the decisions easier to make. I think it would be kind of fun to try some of these things!
I did this once, took a weekend trip to the coast. Recommend every woman do it at least once in her life. Especially if you want to hear from God clearly!
I’ve never traveled on my own but have gone to eat and to the movies by myself. It’s oddly empowering and fun.
Mostly I travel solo for my adventures and I love it! Though sometimes I travel with my hubby too!
If there were ever a place that I will feel absolutely comfortable about visiting alone, it is the beach.
Great timing! I’m actually heading out in a few weeks for my first solo trip!! I have a retreat planned for work near New York so I am going out a few days early to spend sometime in NYC by myself!!

I’ve never traveled alone but now I’m thinking that, even though I’m in a relationship, I should put it on my bucket list! 🙂
Such a beautiful post!

Great trips. I’ve never traveled on my own but now I’m thinking about it. Looks like so much fun!!
