There are so many people who get lost in the sauce about knowing “what career is right for me” or “what should I do with my life”  Knowing what types of jobs are most compatible with your personality can be key to keeping you from wasting your time going into something you may not like or at the very least give you an indication on where you need to go in life in case you don’t even know. 

Which is why I am going to answer the question “what should I do with my life” and “what job should I have” ideally once you follow my process of doing things you should be able to identify both. I am going to tell you exactly how to do it and I am going to use myself as an example so you can understand exactly how to implement each step..

What Career is Right For Me? Based Off Your Personality

1. What Career is Right For Me ~ Take the Test

The test that I am going to recommend is the 16 Personalities (click here) test.  It is free to do, it is extremely accurate, and it is based off of the Meyer Briggs personality test. If you know your Meyer Brigs personality this can help as well. But for the rest of you take the 16 personality test and once you have your personality type I will teach you how to pick a career based on these results and how to interpret them.

Aside from the career advice, this test will give you advice on your relationship, friendship, and parenting according to your personality. Which can just be beneficial for anyone to know anyway.  Now that you have completed this step, what personality are you?

2. What career is right for me. Analyze your results:

You are going to want to analyze your results and to know exactly what all those numbers and letters stand for.  Below are the areas that you want to look at.  And they represent, the five personality aspects: Mind, Energy, Nature, Tactics and Identity. The percentages you would have seen after completing the test are meant to show which categories you fall under, and how strong your preferences are.

3. What Career is Right For Me Understanding Your Results

Your personality results and what those letters mean

I (introverted) or E (extroverted).

• Introverted individuals prefer solitary activities and get exhausted by social interaction. They tend to be quite sensitive to external stimulation (e.g. sound, sight or smell) in general.

• Extraverted individuals prefer group activities and get energized by social interaction. They tend to be more enthusiastic and more easily excited than introvert

Knowing this can help you determine what type of career environment you may feel comfortable in.  An event planner environment (E) can be different from an office environment (I).

Energy comes in either observant (S) or Initiative (N)

• Observant individuals are highly practical, pragmatic and down-to-earth. They tend to have strong habits and focus on what is happening or has already happened.

• Intuitive individuals are very imaginative, open-minded and curious. They prefer novelty over stability and focus on hidden meanings and future possibilities.

Career wise this can help you determine if you want more of a creative career that allows you to be more imaginative over a career that is more rooted in doing the same thing every day.

Nature is categorized in either Thinking (T) or Feeling (F)

• Thinking individuals focus on objectivity and rationality, prioritizing logic over emotions. They tend to hide their feelings and see efficiency as more important than cooperation.

• Feeling individuals are sensitive and emotionally expressive. They are more emphatic and less competitive than Thinking types, and focus on social harmony and cooperation.

Which can mane difference between an analytical career (T) to one that is more social or creative (F).

Tactics separating into judging (J) and prospecting (P)

• Judging individuals are decisive, thorough and highly organized. They value clarity, predictability and closure, preferring structure and planning to spontaneity.

• Prospecting individuals are very good at improvising and spotting opportunities. They tend to be flexible, relaxed nonconformists who prefer keeping their options open.

Career wise this may mean that you need a more structured and organized environment (J) as oppose to one that is more spontaneous and ever changing (P).

Identity separating into Assertive (-A) and Tuburlant (-B)

Assertive (-A) individuals are self-assured, even-tempered and resistant to stress. They refuse to worry too much and do not push themselves too hard when it comes to achieving goals.

Turbulent (-T) individuals are self-conscious and sensitive to stress. They are likely to experience a wide range of emotions and to be success-driven, perfectionistic and eager to improve.

Turbulent individuals perform better in certain roles as they push themselves to achieve superior results and probably would not be okay with sitting in a job where they cannot move up. Assertive individuals may do better in an environment that would normally cause others stress.  Also be sure to explore the other tabs such as strengths, weaknesses, career paths, and workplace habits.

What Career is Right For Me ~ Case In Point My Results:

Now that you have your results you are literally going to follow the same exact process that I am going to show you below using my own results.

My results are above.  As you can see it mentioned all of these key areas but also know what percentage you are on each key area which is important to note. For example, look at my results I have 54% E and 46% I. Meaning that I balance between Extrovert and Introvert. In a work environment I would need a balance between having social interaction and quiet time.

Since I have 46% introvert being in a very social work environment may not be ideal even though I am an extrovert. Also, in the my thinking and feeling is pretty much balanced and therefore seeking a career that I am able to utilized both those areas would be ideal.

4.  What career is right for me ~ Look at Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Within your results that is a specific sections for strengths and weakness. You are going to make a list of them and then after this section come up with career or life path ideas that you feel will cater to both your weaknesses and your strengths.

Strengths of an ENTJ

• Efficient – Commanders see inefficiency not just as a problem in its own right, but as something that pulls time and energy away from all their future goals, an elaborate sabotage consisting of irrationality and laziness.

• Energetic – Rather than finding this process taxing Commanders are energized by it, genuinely enjoying leading their teams forward as they implement their plans and goals.

• Self-Confident – Commanders couldn’t do this if they were plagued by self-doubt – they trust their abilities, make known their opinions, and believe in their capacities as leaders.

• Strong-Willed – Nor do they give up when the going gets tough – Commander personalities strive to achieve their goals, but really nothing is quite as satisfying to them as rising to the challenge of each obstacle in their run to the finish line.

• Strategic Thinkers – Commanders exemplify the difference between moment-to-moment crisis management and navigating the challenges and steps of a bigger plan, and are known for examining every angle of a problem and not just resolving momentary issues, but moving the whole project forward with their solutions.

• Charismatic and Inspiring – These qualities combine to create individuals who are able to inspire and invigorate others, who people actually want to be their leaders, and this in turn helps Commanders to accomplish their often ambitious goals that could never be finished alone.

What career is right for me based on strengths:

• A job that is challenging. 
• Requires energy. 
• One that allows me to shine. 
• One where I can set and achieve goals.  
• One that would allow me to inspire others.
• One In which I can lead.  

Weaknesses of An ENTJ

• Stubborn and Dominant – Sometimes all this confidence and willpower can go too far, and Commanders are all too capable of digging in their heels, trying to win every single debate and pushing their vision, and theirs alone.

• Intolerant – “It’s my way or the highway” – People with the Commander personality type are notoriously unsupportive of any idea that distracts from their primary goals, and even more so of ideas based on emotional considerations. Commanders won’t hesitate a second to make that fact clear to those around them.

• Impatient – Some people need more time to think than others, an intolerable delay to quick-thinking Commanders. They may misinterpret contemplation as stupidity or disinterest in their haste, a terrible mistake for a leader to make.

• Arrogant – Commander personalities respect quick thoughts and firm convictions, their own qualities, and look down on those who don’t match up. This relationship is a challenge for most other personality types who are perhaps not timid in their own right, but will seem so beside overbearing Commanders.

• Poor Handling of Emotions – All this bluster, alongside the assumed supremacy of rationalism, makes Commanders distant from their own emotional expression and sometimes downright scornful of others’. People with this personality type often trample others’ feelings, inadvertently hurting their partners and friends, especially in emotionally charged situations.

• Cold and Ruthless – Their obsession with efficiency and unwavering belief in the merits of rationalism, especially professionally, makes Commanders incredibly insensitive in pursuing their goals, dismissing personal circumstances, sensitivities, and preferences as irrational and irrelevant.

What career is right for me based on weakness:

• One in which I can work alone, as I tend to like it my way and push my own vision.  
• One in which I am a leader or supervisor.  

• Work with strong minded people who can accept constructive criticism, are not lazy, and are goal oriented such as myself. 

5. What Career Is Right For Me ~ Work Place Habits

By this time you should have a good idea on what you need in a job versus what you don’t need in a job. It is okay, at this time if you do not have an exact career or job  because we will get to that later. But if you are just wondering what should I do with my life then the above exercise can be so important as you know what job, careers, and situations that you would thrive in versus the ones you won’t.

Now onto workplace habits which is a separate section on your results. Which is separate into subordinates, colleagues, and managers. This is important because I hate to say it some of you may be better subordinate then a leader and some of you may need to work alone over working with a lot of people.  Here is my assessment of my personality:

Commander Subordinates

• Subordinate positions are challenging for Commanders. 

• Commandeer personalities may slip into periods of absentmindedness, but when they feel involved in the projects around them, they prove well organized and well prioritized.

• Opportunities for growth keep people with the Commander personality type engaged and productive, and so long as their managers recognize this as their primary responsibility, it will be a fruitful and satisfying relationship.

Overall assessment of being an subordinate: My workplace must be productive, engaging, fulfilling work wise, and must have the ability to climb the career chain.

Commander Colleagues

• Commanders are sociable and greatly enjoy sharing ideas and critiques in their frequent brainstorming sessions.

• Commander personalities enjoy working with equals, but people must demonstrate that they are equals – anyone Commanders view as being less competent or driven will see only condescension and arrogance.

• Commanders are strong-willed, even dominant, and though they enjoy inspiring and tutoring others, the energy they bring to the process can seem overbearing.

Overall assessment of being a colleague: My workplace must have smart and like minded people who are not afraid to work hard and are intellectual. I would also be good and mentoring others as long as they do not mind constructive criticism.

Commander Managers

• Commander managers are confident, charismatic communicators, and they communicate but one vision: to get the job done as efficiently as possible, and to the highest standard of quality.

• Commanders are natural leaders, and their ability to formulate a strategy and to identify the strengths of each member of their teams, incorporating those abilities into their plans so that each individual fills a unique and important role, makes them able motivators.

Overall assessment of being a manager: This would be an ideal role for my personality. I would need to either be a manager or be in a position where I could work up to a manager.

6. What Career is Right For Me ~ Career Paths

So now that you have a full understanding of your personality let’s go into career paths.   Just because I am in ENTJ, part of my E is really very close to being an I and it is that way for my thinking and feeling categories.  It is important for you to know this because not all of the career suggestions may fit you depending on where you stand on in your personality.

Now go over to the career path category in your results and list the career paths that they suggest.  Feel free to not list those that you feel would not go well with the particulars of your personality.

• Executive positions (Although this is listed for my personality, would not work for me. The I in my personality would allow me to want to work alone). 
• Entrepreneurialism
• Corporate strategists
• Lawyers and judges.
• Public Speakers
• Business administration
• Commanders are visionaries and leaders, not grunts or day-to-day administrators.
• Anything with leadership and responsibility, growth and opportunity, and genuinely enjoy managing others to get a job done. (I would not like to manage people). 

7. What Career is Right For Me And What should I do with my life ~  Come up with a career

At this point, you can choose to google more jobs with all of the information you have about yourself above to find specific jobs that actually fit with your personality based on what you know about yourself.  You can watch my video down below to help you learn how to job search.

From the list above I took the things I was most passionate about AND as a visionary I manage to come up with a career all on my own that embodies my visionary spirit. I will highlight the keywords so that you can see how I turned the above search into a career and life path that matched me.

What Career is Right For Me ~ Entrepreneur
