Have you ever had those days where you feel like giving up and you are trying to figure out how to trust God? Typically when people have trouble in figuring out how to trust God, they feel like giving up it is because they are frustrated with life and they feel like it God has the ability to stop whatever they are going through but He won’t.
In those moments it can be a struggle in learning how to trust God. Trusting that God can deliver the big dreams that you hope for or dig you out of a terrible situation. But still feeling worried at the same time that God will not come through on anything and your life will continue on this downward spiral.
You are not alone and I have also felt this emotion (check out my blog on the time I was mad God). As a believer and as a Christian struggling on how to trust God can be a common situation, especially when you feel like giving up.
But you have to remember
“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declare the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” –Jeremiah 29:11
In those feel like giving up moments, just remember that God has a plan for you and God knows the plans that He has for you even if He does not tell you that. Learning how to trust God has an element of faith to it. You can learn to look beyond what you see and learn how to trust God regardless of what you feel.
Even though God wants us to prosper there is also refining (see my blog here on how God wants us to prosper). But you have to understand that in life God wants to refine our character to make sure that we are ready to step into the promises of God (see my blog here on to whom much is given much is required). Sometimes we have to endure something to make us into a better person. And even though we may not see it, God is working behind the scenes, putting the right people in place so that when the time is right, we can have the right opportunities. And even though it seems like God is hurting us in the process, He is really trying to make us stronger. And knowing that God is working behind the scenes to help us even though we cannot see what is going on, means that we must learn how to trust God.
In those moments where we feel like giving up it is hard to see that God is doing something. When we do not see things moving the way we want them to move, how we want them to move, and as fast as we want them to move, it leaves us feeling frustrated with ourselves and frustrated with God. Which leads us to being angry at God not because of something that God has done but because we do not understand what God is doing.
I have come to understand that being prosperous in God’s eyes may not look like being prosperous in our eyes. When we prosper in God’s eyes, it is for the greater good of God, not ourselves. Whatever God has called us to do, it will enrich His kingdom, and in the process of being an asset to God’s kingdom then we are also blessed as well.
So the first part of learning how to trust God, is that you must understand that His ways are not our ways. You may feel like you are suffering and like you want to give up and God may see you as getting stronger. You also have to be able to discern if you feeling like giving up is actually what God wants for you. If you are choosing your own direction and getting frustrated with the results, it could be because God is telling you not to go in that direction in the first place. But you are choosing to be hardheaded, doing what you want to do, and when it does not work out you want to give up and you want to blame God.
But this is where the internal struggle begins. Because we want what we want, how we want it, and we do not want to see the bigger picture. In the end we must believe that God has the best for us and wants the best for us even though we do not understand what He is doing. And we have to know that if He is allowing something to happen to us that it is for a reason because God’s plans include prospering us not keeping us in a permanent state of despair. Even if we feel like we are in despair, an element on knowing how to trust God is required so that we do not stay in that despair but we lean on God to keep us from wanting to give up completely.
For those days where you see no end in sight and the days that you want to give up, you just keep going; trusting that God is leading you somewhere even if you do not know where. Or even if the path that you are going down does not look like what you thought it would look like.
The idea of Christianity is very simple. Either you can choose to believe God and all those wonderful things in the Bible or you do not. You can choose to believe that God is leading you in the right direction or not. You can choose to believe that whatever rut you are in right now is going to last forever or not. You can learn how to trust God when you feel like giving up or you can choose not to. And once you learn how to trust God then when ever you are going through something you will lean on Him again and again knowing that He can pull you out of whatever it is you are going through. Because He has before.
It can be hard to trust God when you are stuck struggling to pay your bills and always tittering on the edge of being broke. It can be hard to trust that you are going to be a parent after you have be diagnosed with infertility. It can be hard to see that God is going to bring something great from a difficult situation, when all you see is the difficult situation, and the difficult situations keep coming back to back. I get it, in those moments you feel like giving up.
But if we do not believe that God can do these things, then why believe in God at all? If anyone can turn things around and make things happen then sure
ly, God can? If not Him; then who? And if not anyone, you would be stuck in the mind frame that your situation is permanent and will never change. And this simple statement is not the work of God; but the work out doubt and being fearful.
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” 1 John 4:18
In closing when you feel like giving up, know that God loves you. He wants to prosper you. And if you do not give up even though you feel like giving up, then you will prosper (check out my blog here). And there is no need to leave in fear of the future or what God is doing because fear is not of God and God has plans to make your life better (see my blog here on fear is not perfected in love). But God is still going to require that you do your part. And doing your part means you must learn how to trust God.
