Let’s talk about how to find your purpose. A lot of people think that it is hard to find your purpose but, to be honest with you everything that you need to both find your purpose and to live out the life that you want is right under your nose.
Let me tell you a story. I randomly fell into the counseling field after being a correctional officer and became a case manager. I noticed that encouraging people came naturally to me and even in my Master’s program, my professor told me I had a natural gift.
But counseling was not my only gift, with me going through my hardship, being broke, and having to learn how to dress on a budget; this situation allowed me to develop a unique sense of style on a budget. And because I did not want to walk around looking busted I had to learn how to do my own hair and makeup on my own which are the same things that I like to teach you.
When I was in my internship for counseling I used to counsel young women and they wanted tips on how to dress and how to look like they had confidence, and when I confided in another therapist working at the office I told her I would love to find a way to combine all the things I was passionate about but I did not feel they were related, and she opened my eyes and told me they were, through blogging. And low and behold the tech-savvy blogger that you are reading now was born.
1. How To Find Your Purpose ~ What’s my point?
If you are looking for the key to find your purpose the fact of the matter is that you are probably sitting on your natural gifts and talents and you don’t even realize it. And you have everything within your reach to pursue that purpose in a way that is befitting to you. In this day and age, no matter what your talents or your gifts are you can get paid for it.
Most people’s issue is that they are so used to their gifts that they overlook them or they think that their gifts are so common that no one will want to see them do it. This is not true because no one can use your gifts in your purpose the way you do. (Check out my blog on how your flaws can be used toward your purpose).
Who knew that the YouTube series that Issa Ray had would lead her to have a show on HBO. Who knew that Michelle Phan getting rejected from being hired at Mac would lead her to start a YouTube channel on makeup and then launching her multimillion-dollar beauty brand. The one way that purpose can be found is that you have to do it even if no one else is doing it or if what you want to do is unheard of.

2. How To Find Your Purpose ~ Your Life Experiences Lead You To Your Purpose
Had I never been laid off from my job I would have never learned how to dress on a budget and discover I had an amazing talent for doing my own hair, and if I had not discovered that then I would not be able to teach you. If I was never a correctional officer (which I did not show up for the first interview by the way and they called me back to reschedule) then I would not have never got into the mental health field.
And if I was not this woman who really loved to read the Bible then I would not be able to make it applicable to everyday problems. My point is that the life lessons and experiences that you go through are leading you to your purpose.
If you read the story of Joseph in the Bible (Genesis 37-50), he had a natural gift for dream interpretation. Which in turn made his brothers jealous and caused him to be sold into slavery. Which in turn caused him to work for Potiphar, which in turn caused him to be put in prison because Potiphar’s wife accused him of rape.
Which caused him to dream interpret for a fellow prisoner who worked for the king who then two years later told Pharaoh about Joseph because the king needed a dream interpreter. And because Joseph was able to interpret his dream, saving Egypt from famine, he became the second most powerful man in Egypt next to Pharaoh.
The point is:
That Joseph’s life had ups, downs, and hardships and some things did not seem fair. I am sure that he did not think him working as a slave had anything to do with his gift for dream interpretation. But all of these series of events was just leading him to the right people. Therefore, pay attention to what you are going through and you can use your experience to help you find what you are passionate about and the direction that God is pushing you to go. Which brings me to my next point.
3. How To Find Your Purpose ~ The path of least resistance.
I am sure that you have heard this popular phrase before, that the path you are supposed to take is the path of least resistance. This is not to say that all doors will open easily, and you will never come up with any opposition because that is not true, opposition can make up stronger.
BUT you can find out what path you are supposed to take by just paying attention to what doors open and what doors remain closed. Take the story of Saul, who persecuted the Christians and on his way to do just that God struck him blind because God had another purpose for Saul and so he said this.
‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ Acts 26:14
Goads are a contraption that will prick cattle when they are not going in the direction that the driver wants them to go. So really it is a metaphor if God is trying to lead you in a direction to your purpose and you keep bumping your head against the wall instead of getting frustrated reevaluate because you may be kicking against the goads. God may be trying to lead you in one way, and you may be going another.
Like Saul was a persecutor of the Christians but God’s purpose for him was to preach the gospel and convert people into Christians. He was blinded because he was going against God’s will for his life. And the only way he could be unblinded was to follow God’s way and to stop going against the goads.
You do have to take a leap of faith when you are learning how to find your purpose. Failure happens but a key indicator on what path you should take is the one of least resistance. In the book the Alchemist which you can click my affiliate link here to buy, he said the most interesting quote:
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
Of course, for me the universe is God but when you want something, provided that it is in God’s will He is going to help you get it. So you will notice that certain doors, opportunities, and even people will come your way to show you the path you are supposed to follow.
4. How To Find Your Purpose ~ What Are You Naturally Good At?
When you read my story notice that counseling, hair, beauty, and fashion was something that I was naturally good at. I was always a tech-savvy person and I always loved to write, and all of these gifts I used in the creation of this blog. You can have many things that you are good at, one, or something strange that you are good at.
It does not matter. Just try to figure out how can you use those things to help you on the path to find your purpose and know that you possess what is within your reach to make that happen. Do not make excuses that you can’t because you don’t have. Just like I said in my talents blog:
A man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. Matthew 25:14-17
All of this is just a metaphor that God gave you everything that is within your ability to find your purpose. It is up to you to harness those gifts, meaning make them better. Whitney Houston could SING! But did you know before she put out her album, she went through years of vocal training to make her better? The singing was the natural gift, the training was to harness her gift to make it better and it was the ultimate development of that gift is what she is known for. And that gift was her purpose.
What do people tell you you’re good at? What do you like to do? Because that is a great place to start on how to find your purpose AND the second is that you need to multiply those gifts by becoming better at utilizing them.
