It is that time of the month again. This is a beauty bloggers dream. You do not know how excited I get when my beauty box subscriptions come in the mail. It is time for a review on all of the monthly beauty boxes that I received during March. The typical monthly beauty box subscriptions I get are Ipsy Glam, BirchBox, and Onyx both. In addition, every season (4 times a year) I get the BeautyCon Box, which is always exciting because of the amazing stuff that comes in it.
So without further delay, let us get into the Beauty Box reviews. Which by the best I must say that these are best beauty boxes I have found, especially for this month. All of the subscription boxes for this month were amazing and I was not disappointed.
Ipsy Glam Bag Review
Normally Ipsy is at the top of my list when it comes to beauty subscription boxes for women. This month was a good month, but it was not my absolute favorite Ipsy Glam bag as far as products go.
The bag for this month was cute, it was a little bigger than the normal Ipsy bag which makes it perfect for traveling. I plan to use it to put my make up in as I got on trips because it is big enough to hold my brush.
The bag came with:
I typically shy away from hair products when it comes to beauty box subscriptions, because I am a black beauty blogger with natural hair, so often times the hair products are a miss. But what I love about Ipsy is that they ask you to create a personal profile with your hair type and I felt like this is a product that I will use on my natural hair. I am not sure if it is solely a natural hair product. I think that it is for all curly hair, but I can see myself using it to define by curl pattern. The smell of the product is also nice; it smells a lot like Ganier.
This is a pretty color that will fit for all skin tones. It looks like it orange in the package, but really it is closer to a reddish color. The lip color is vibrate and of course, it is matte, which is really in right now.
This is a pretty shade. It is nowhere near as pigmented as I would like it to be. It is very dull and natural toned. I think for most people they would love it, I tend to just like vibrant eyeshadows that pop out on my back. Being a black beauty blogger in hard with products like this. Because although it is a nice shade, I also recognize that since I am darker, this shade will not really show up as well on my as it would a lighter toned person. Which is probably why I didn’t like it more.
I swear that it was destiny that this brush found me. My last blending brush just broke a few weeks ago. I have still been using it though, because a blending brush is my favorite brush and a must have it you want to blend out your eyeshadow. It is areally good quality and it exactly what I needed.
This eyeliner is decent. I am bias though since I really like liquid based eyeliner and very rarely use hard eyeliners. A positive of this eyeliner though, is that it does screw up. Meaning that many eyeliner that have a plastic base have little product in them. This one you can twist, and it has a lot of product in it.
Overall Ipsy Glam Bag Review: I would give it a 6 out of 10 start. I did love most of the products but a lot of the products did not stand out for me. None of them really had that “wow I am very excited I get to try this product” feeling for me. Sorry Ipsy. But I still love you and I still feel like Ipsy is one of the best beauty subscription boxes for women. Especially since it is affordable and tailored to what you prefer.
Oh Birchbox, it has been a love hate relation with you. Birchbox past boxes have not been so good for me. But what I will say is that when you rate the products and start to tell them what you like in your past Birchboxes versus what you don’t like, they will start to send you more of what you like. So I suspect that as time goes on I will get better boxes, because this month’s Birchbox was a win for me.
What I can say about this product is that I love the smell. And it is highly scented. It has something that I like to call a grown women smell. I know a lot of other beauty bloggers I see love fruity smells. I don’t I like a more serious smell if that makes sense. Once again as a black beauty blogger writing this post that I know some black women will wonder “does this work for my hair, or natural hair?” My answer to you is I don’t know. It is mostly used for a heat protectant and nourishes your hair. I do not see anything in the ingredient list that makes me think it wouldn’t work. It seems like it is fitted for all hair types and I plan to use it to straighten my hair.
I was happy to get this and it was also a pretty decent size as well. I wear a full face of make up everyday and my struggle has always been getting all the make up off my face everyday. Because my sensitive skin that is prone to breaking out, removing make up is important. That is why I was not only happy to get this BUT this water is supposed to nourish your skin as well.
This is pink color that is a little lighter than I would have like. But I am not scared of any lip color. I think we can all be real that no matter who you are, that lip colors can scare us because not all lip colors go with every skin tone. I am dark so although I would wear this color, it is a little bit light. Which just means that I would wear a darker lip liner so that it would blend in more.
I was actually confused about what this was at first because it say “brightener” I thought it was like a skin brighting cream or something. But once I opened it, it is more like a highlighter. And we all know that I love a good highlighter. This one is cream based and I had to apply a pretty fair amount in order to get the “highlight” effect. Also, it was very oily, which gives me concerns as someone who already has oily skin.
This smells so good. I cannot even tell you! You know that grown woman smell I was talking about above. This perfume has it! I cannot wait to wear it. It just smells so expensive.
This is a shampoo and conditioner, which I will also be using. The grown woman smell in this box was on fleek because both of these had that heavily scented smell that I love. I love the idea that when someone leans into you, they can smell your hair it smells like perfume.
Overall Birchbox Review: I am going to give this box a 8 out of 10. The scented products won me over. The only think that is preventing it from getting a 10 out of 10 is because I have not used the hair products yet and I am not sure if they will work on my natural hair. And the lip color was a little too light for me, but I would still rock it.
Beauty Con Box Review
This is the spring 2017 Beautycon box. When I got it I got the chills. I swear. It was so heavy and the products in it were so abundant.
I saw this eyeshadow palette and was excited. The packaging is amazing and the brush it comes with is a very decent quality. When I opened it the excitement faded a little because for this to be a spring box, I would have liked to see the colors be more vibrant and colorful and these colors were more of a neutral tone.
I love this color. It puts me in mind of the Tarte lipcolor with the Ipsy Glam bag. The colors are not exactly the same but they are very similar.
Garnier SkinActive Micellar Make up Removing Towellettes
In my past Beautycon Box (see here). I got the Garnier water. So these are the wipes, which as I mentioned with Birch box, anything giving me a way to remove my makeup is a win for me.
When I first saw this blush, I was not sure that I would like it. I swatched this on the inside of my hand which is the whiter side and the normal side of my hand, just to tell the color difference. I will show up better on lighter skin, but it also showed up pretty well on my skin and did not look tacky. This blush is a settle blush and for darker skinned girls, unless you cake it on, it will give you a very settle peach blush look.
This is the third Luxie brush I have gotten from my beauty subscription boxes. This one is different from the other two as this one is a power brush. It feels different from the blush and blending brush I have from Luxie. This brush is a lot less dense at the top, I assume to ease the application of powder.
I was so confused on what this was. I thought it was nail polish. It is a shimmering gold color with glitter, but it mostly said it is a skin and hair oil. I would use this for my body and for my face if I want a soft shimmer. Not for my hair though. It will give you a very very settle look if you apply it on your skin. Do not expect it to be too pigmented.
I love NYX. I love this Illuminating stick. I actually have a NYX stick in another color, which is why I was happy to get this one. It is very pigmented and I would use this particular color for blush whereas the other one I have I use for a highlighter.
I have used OGX products before and I feel that it is good for all hair type depending on the products you get. This has a light flower scent to it but really; I am not sure how much I would use it as it is for color treated hair, which is something I do not have. But I can see using it as a moisturizer for my hair in general.
There are so many eyebrow kits roaming around these days and I have a few of them. Although I do not feel this kit is horrible, all it has it the powder for your brows. The eyebrow kits that I do best with, come with a brow gel because I have curly brows and the gels help slicks them down. That would be the only thing I would change with this kit. I do love the brush, and will probably use it for some of the other brow kits I like better.
Overall BeautyCon Box Review: What can I say I give it a 10 out of 10. I love most of the products and all the products all full size, for $24 a month. That price is close to the same as my Onyx Box in which I get a lot less.
Onyx Box Review
The Onyx Box that I got last month was seriously slacking (see here). It was not even cute that I paid $21 and that was what they sent me. But this month they did redeem themselves.
This was a good product to have. I do not have any eyelashes but I am always looking for something that will make it look like I have more eyelashes then I really do. Who wants to put on fake eyelashes all day? Not me, so I will be using this.
This is my favorite product from this box. I will be glad to try this product because my face is in need of some serious therapy right now, and it came in a pretty decent size.
This color is really pretty and really pigmented. This is certainly my type of eyeshadow. It is shimmery and it shows up well on my skin. So that this is a win in my book.
Another win in my book is this eyeliner pin. Remember I told you I prefer liquid liner over the hard one, that is what this is but in a pin form. The way the tip is shaped you should have no problem getting precision from this eyeliner.
I do not wear primer every day, but when I do I notice a difference. I have tried this Smashbox primer before and so I know it works. It is only sample size, which is fine enough for me for the times I do want to wear primer.
Unlike the other hair products in the bother beauty box subscriptions, I know that this is formulated for black hair. I already use Crème of Nature so really this is a good travel size that I can take with me when I travel.
Another product that I already use and I will just keep this one as a travel size, for TSA when you can only bring like an ounce on the plane.
Overall, I will give Onyx 10 out of 10. They have redeemed themselves this month and they have given me ALL beauty products that I will use. The Onyx box is specifically for women of color, so most of their products are geared more toward things I will use any way.
