Life is too short so you mine as well go after what you want and live your own life.  Your time is limited!  In the famous words of Steve Jobs I want to start off by saying.

“Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.“ ~Steve Jobs

I know this is a feel good quote that people like to hear but in reality most people are living someone else’s life which is why this post is about how to live your own life.  It seems so simple doesn’t it? Just go live your own life? But the fact of the matter is that too many people care too much about what other people think. And because they care too much about what other people think, they get stuck playing by other people’s rules, living other people’s standards, and doing what other people want them to do. Let me give you an example:

  • Someone majored in business in college over art because they have heard that business is more practical and they won’t be able to get a job as an artist.
  • Someone decided to be a lawyer because their mom and dad were lawyers, and so where their grandparents and so they wanted to keep the family tradition.
  • Someone who decided to do, get married, have kids, what job to take, or what where they should live based on what other people think they should do.

And while these things don’t seem like a big deal at first, as years go by and you are chasing someone else’s dream and doing what other people want you to do, you will soon realize that you just let your life pass you by. Or worst, you will get into a life that you hate altogether because the life that you are living is not your life, but someone else’s and so while it is a good idea for them, you are not them, and therefore their choices are not a good idea for you.

1. Go After What You Want, Live Your Own Life, Your Time Is Limited ~ Case in point : Superwoman

In case you don’t know Superwoman is a famous YouTuber that is known for comedy. In her book “How to be a Bawse” click affiliate link to buy, she stated that her parents wanted her to be a psychologist.

After she finished her undergrad she told her parents to let her do what she loved (which was comedy) for a year and if it did not work out then she would become a psychologist.  Well low and behold it did work out, and Lilly Singh (AKA Superwoman) depression faded as she found her purpose and did what she loved instead of waiting away getting a degree that she did not want and doing something that she did not want to do.

2. Go After What You Want, Live Your Own Life, Your Time Is Limited ~ What’s my point:

My point is that if Lilly had listened to her parents then she would not be where she is today. She makes WAY More than a psychologist and she is doing something that she loves. YouTube was very risky and who knew if she would make it, it was not the logical choice.  But at least trying was better than sitting still and doing nothing. And in this case her trying allowed her to get the life that she wanted.

3. Go After What You Want, Live Your Own Life, Your Time Is Limited ~ Because Life Is Too Short

When you really think about it, the moment that you are in right now can only be lived once, there is no going back and there are no do overs. Once the moment is gone, once you age, or once your life is over then it is over. When you really view your life that way, you will come to understand that although life seems long it is really too short to sit around living someone else’s life and doing what other people want you to do.  Wouldn’t you much rather live your own?

As I said in my Single Mom’s Devotional which you can buy here:

"No matter what our life situation is, tomorrow is not promised to anyone. So why not enjoy today?"

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Proverbs 27:1

You do not know what the next hour, minute, or second may bring, and therefore, you should go after everything you ever wanted with all your heart. The last thing you want to do is to look back on your life with a whole bunch of  "what ifs and regrets because you were just sitting around, waiting, and watching the paint on the door."

My point is that (God forbid) you could die tomorrow. Nothing and no one is promised beyond the moment that we are currently in. And we are all going to die some day so why not just live your own life NOW?  If this whole life thing is going to come to an end, I rather go out with a bang then go back thinking that my life sucked and I wish I could have a do over. Because you can’t there are no do overs.

And there should be no “oh I will wait until xy and z time to start living my life.” Because xy and z time may never come.  So do not put off until tomorrow what you can do today. 4. Go After What You Want, Live Your Own Life, Your Time Is Limited ~ Because You May Be Robbing The World Of Someone Wonderful.

What if the creator of Facebook never created Facebook. What if Steve Jobs never dreamed up apple? What if Benjamin Franklin never invented electricity? Then where would be? What all of these people have in common is that they had a vision that was specific to them and they brought something to the world that really did not exist before.  They all took a risk, to live their own life and did not just take the “ordinary path” to no where. They would have robbed the world of the unique talents and gifts that are solely their to share with the world.

I believe that what Steve Jobs meant by his quote is that there are so many people in this world that have so much potential or have so many dreams but instead they have become complacent and do nothing or listen to other people on what they should be doing instead of listening to themselves.

There are people in the world who want to start their own business but they don’t. And as a result they sit in a dead in job that they hate day in and day out making someone else rich and not offering their unique talent to the world. I can only imagine how much the world is missing because that dream died with (fill in the blank) because they were too scared to step out on their own dream. Which is like the story of Madam CJ Walker a first generation free slave that became a millionare and got a house next to Rockfeller.

5.  Go After What You Want, Live Your Own Life, Your Time Is Limited ~ Because You Are You

So maybe you may not be listening to other people  but you may be that person trying to live and be like someone else. Trying to re-create the other person’s life instead of being yourself. You want to be the next Kim K, so you get plastic surgery to look like her and try to act like her, thinking then you will get a career like hers.   Let me break something to you, you are you and no amount of medical procedures or changing your personality is going to change that.

And you cannot imitate someone else’s life because they are them and their life is for them while you are you and you were meant to live your own life. You may be able to be a “copy” off someone else and may be able to imitate their life to some capacity, but you will never be a good as the real thing. Which is why when you try to be like someone else, you will always fall short because no matter how hard you try you can never be that other person.

Everyday that you go through trying to be someone else or live someone else’s life is pointless because that is a goal that will never be attained because you are not them. You have to be yourself because everyone else is taken . You have to know yourself because you will be spending your whole life with you. You have to do what you love and do what makes you happy. If you don’t know what you are meant to do then check out my video down below that can help you find your talents.

6. Go After What You Want, Live Your Own Life, Your Time Is Limited ~ Case in point Steve Harvey

I love Steve Harvey and his books especially:

But when Steve first wanted to become a comedian people thought it was weird. He went to quit his Ford job and his boss talked him out of him telling him that he did not want to quit his Ford job to be a comedian no less and that working there was a “good thing.”

People would “kill” to work at Ford. At first Steve Harvey listened to them, but after he got some courage he quit again, this time not allowing his boss to talk him out of it. The path was not always easy but now he is a King of Comedy, a best selling author, a comedian, talk show host, game show host, and at this point I am just going to stop because he has too many jobs to count.

7. Go After What You Want, Live Your Own Life, Your Time Is Limited ~ What’s my point

My point is that if Steve would have listened to his boss he would still be at that Ford company today wondering “what if” and hating everyday that he worked in that factory.  My point is that so many people allow other people to dictate their life choices. People allow their families to tell them what job to take, what school to go to, who to marry, where to move, when to have kids, who to have as friends, what car to buy; the list can go one and on.

But the more you allow other people to dictate to you what you should and should not be doing the less time you are spending learning to make decisions for yourself and going after the blessing that are solely for you and only YOU.  My last piece of advice is to live every moment as if it is your last, because it very well may be your last.

Tomorrow is promised to no one and there are a lot of people in the world looking back on their life wondering where all their time went, how they just let life pass them by, and how they managed to spend their life doing nothing of significance with it.  Follow your own dreams and not the dreams of someone else or dreams that other people have planted in your head.  No one is going to believe in you more than you believe in yourself. You were created for a purpose.  It is up to you to find out what that is.

  1. Your words, “Each moment you will only live once. So chose your moments, live them wisely, are more importantly live them how you want to live them” and this wonderful posting are so true. However like most of us I learned the reality of this truth too late in life. Now late in life and looking back I wish I had stopped and reveled in those moments that make great memories on our life’s road.

  2. Very true words – thank you. It’s taken me many years to finally realize this, but I’m glad I do. This year is about harnessing my passion and making it work for me so that I can live my best life. I’m working on growing my blog, building a subscriber resource library and developing my first e-course and I’m excited about it because it’s what I’m passionate about. I kept putting it off because of, well, life, but I’ve realized I only have now … and so here we are!

  3. I know so many people who do not live out to their full potential. I try to do as much as I can now because you never know when things could change. I take advantage of every opportunity I get.
