When thinking about quitting a job you hate it seems like a no-brainer right? I do understand, I have been in plenty of jobs that I have hated. Sometimes I left right on time and sometimes I left prematurely.  I get that you feel stuck in a job, you may be feeling underpaid, undervalued, or you may not like the people that you are working with. It causes you so much frustration that you just want to walk out right on the spot? Before you do that, I want to tell you this.

1. Quitting The Job You Hate ~  Before You Quit The Job You Hate Look Before You Leap

I know when you are stuck in a bad job you are willing to take anything (as in another job) just to get out of where you are. That is the worst thing that you can do.  Quitting your job without backup or if you act off on impulse and take the next thing that comes around, then you more than likely will end up in another job that you hate.

Instead, when you are applying for a new job do not let the fact that you hate your old job guide your decision.  Only apply and take a new job that you feel is a good fit for you.  Do not just impulsively jump into another job without doing your research on the new company that you are going to.  There could be a million reasons for quitting your job but do no let those reasons cloud your judgment that you take another job that is worse.

Quitting The Job You Hate ~ Case and point

I used to work with a co-worker that hated the job, hated the company, and did not want to work there anymore.  Because of her hate for the company, she jumped into a new job, working more hours, worker harder, and making less money. And guess what? She then hated that job even more.

The issue with my former co-worker was that she disliked the company that we worked for so much that she was willing to just jump into anything, even if it meant jumping into a worse situation.  Also, check out my video below for tips on how to find a better job.

2. Quitting The Job You Hate ~ Before You Quit The Job You Hate Think Should You?

If you are stuck in a bad job. Then try to at least stay there for a year.  When you are sending out your resume, it looks really bad for you to job hop after only a few weeks or a few months.  Because your new company is more than likely looking for someone they can keep on for the long term.

So if you have a history of job-hopping after only a few weeks or months you are less likely to get chosen for a new job. When you go into an interview it is not really acceptable to say “Oh I quit that job only after a few months because I hated working there.” Although that may be true it still is not a good reflection on you that you have to explain that to a new employer.

Quitting the job you hate ~ Case in point

When I applied for a position at a good company the last two companies I worked for I had only been there for a few months. The reason being is because I did not agree with their business practices as in they were doing things against the policy, they kept screwing up my paycheck, and they lied to me about how much I was going to be making.

When it came down to an interview with the new company I tried to explain this as diplomatically as I could. But it did not matter. At the end of the day, what mattered what was on paper and they did not want to hire someone that had a history of quitting jobs only after a few months.  Also, check out my blog for tips on your resume.

3. Before Quitting The Job You Hate ~ Think About If Your Job Is Actually Helping You.

There are some jobs that you can hate, but even in the midst of you hating you can still get a lot of experiences from them. So before you leave a job that you hate, think about the long term.  If you are in a job that if you stay there for a year you can get promoted to a position that you really want to be in.  You can suck it up in your current position, knowing that your current position is not where you will be forever.

Quitting The Job You hate ~ Case in point the Devil Wear Prada

If you have never read the book (click here to buy) or seen the movie (click here to buy) then you must. This is a fictional story that is based on a true story. Yes, the boss was super difficult. But after a while, I got tired of the main characters complaining. Everyone literally told her that if she worked at the job for a year and could suck it up then she could get any job that she wanted in New York because of the connections that she had made.  And the main character ended up quitting before the year.

But when you think about it a job you hate does not seem so bad if you are going to make a valuable connection, be eligible for a better job, or get very valuable work experience.  Sometimes it is just best to suck it up for the time being because you know a bigger and better opportunity will be on the horizon if you do.

4. Quitting The Job You Hate ~  Ask Yourself, Is It You?

If you find yourself hating almost every job that you are in. Then you may need to reflect on the fact that the issue is you and not the other people around you.  That means that no matter what job you are in, you are always going to have a problem because you are the problem.  In this case, you need to change yourself and once you do that, the job may not seem so bad.

Quitting The Job You Hate ~ Case in point: my bad boss

In my book for single women which you can buy or read more about here, I spoke about this bad boss that I had. She always thought that it was everyone else when it was really her.  Take the following excerpt from my book to get my point.

Have you ever heard of the word “issues”? I am sure you have, but what if I change the word from issues to ITS YOU. There are a lot of women in this world who lack self- awareness. I want to tell you about an old supervisor I had. This woman was a whole new level being mentally unstable. Every time a new woman got hired and the men at the workplace paid more attention to them than they did her, she would either fire the woman or make her life a living nightmare on the job until she quit. Then she would try to get with the man and wonder why he ran away from her. She was nuts. In everything she did, she was insane.

But yet and still every day, she would complain about how she was not married and how no man wanted her. Then she would beg people around the office to pray with her. Once a person did pray with her the next day, she was back to her scheming ways making that person’s life terrible all over again. The point that I am getting at is that my supervisor used to cry and be upset because no man wanted to be in a relationship with her and no one wanted to be her friend.

When everyone turned their back on her at work, she turned it into everyone else having the problem. She victimized herself not knowing why people treated her like this. It was not that other people had the issue; she had the issue.  So reflect on issues or it's you! It was her, being mean and nasty to people all day every day. Instead of her trying to change, she blamed the problems of her life on other people when in fact she was creating the problems in her life.

I remember my boss tried to go to another company and got fired the same day and had to come back to the company she was just working for.  She would complain about how the job sucked but the reason why the job sucked is that it was HER. If this is the case, it is not going to matter where you go. You will always hate your job because you are the reason for your own misery.

Fifth, Reasons For Not Quitting Your Job Does It Refine Your Character

You can read my blog on what I learned from Crazy Bosses (here). But in every single case that I was in a job that I hated, it was able to make me a better person.  It helped me learn to control my tongue and not talk back to people.  It helped me learn to control my temper.  It helped me not to be controlled by my emotions.

One of the hardest things that you can do on a job that you hate, is to come to work every day, work hard, and put a smile on your face even though you feel like crying.  It teaches you self-control.  It teaches you not to be led by your emotions.  At the end of the day, we are always going to get into things that we do not like, but if you can master not letting those things control how you feel, then you can master a lot.

Case in point: The case of the bad boss continued

The bad boss that I had I actually worked with her for three years. IT WAS A NIGHTMARE. But what I learned is that after dealing with her there is little workplace drama that can get to me now because after you have dealt with the worst, a workplace that is a little bad, somewhat bad, or not ideal does not seem so bad. Because you remember what it was like to be worst situations and work with the worst people.

Last, How To Quit A Job You Hate Gracefully Don’t Start Drama

It is tempting that when we are stuck in a job that we do not like, that we want to raise hell about it. We want to talk about other people, complain about the job, and do everything in our power to let everyone know that we do not like working here.  Creating more drama will just make the situation worse.  Creating drama for other people will only create drama for yourself, which will make your job an even more unbearable place to work at. I get that you hate to work there.

But you creating more drama will make other people hate to work there too and see you as the source of the reason why they hate coming to work.  Sometimes it is best to just keep your complaining and your drama to yourself, even if you do not like working there everyone does not have to know it. Be nice to people and try to make your corner of the world as enjoyable as possible do not become part of the problem.

When you are thinking about quitting a job you hate. There is a right way to handle yourself and a wrong way.  You want to handle yourself gracefully.  Even if you hate your job no one should know. Do not go around complaining talking about how you want to leave.  Always remain positive because you never know who is watching and you never know when your new job will want a reference from your old job. And the last thing you want is to be known as the person who complained all the time. Do your job, be positive, and when it is time for you to quit you will quit.  Also, check out my video on how to clap back at bosses gracefully.

Case in point

I remember working at a job I did not like and the supervisor that I worked with did not like me.  But instead of showing that I was nice to everyone, I did my job, and I worked well with the clients under me.  When I left guess what? All the clients that were working with me kept asking for me, asking where I went, and if they could follow me to the company that I left for.

And the boss that I did not like tried to beg me to come back. Of course, I didn’t but you get the point. The point is that your reputation should be good. Imagine if when you leave all the people you worked with are glad that you are gone.  Be a source of joy and not a source of pain.

If you know someone who is thinking about quitting a job they hate, before they do it please share this post with them so to make sure they are taking everything into consideration.

  1. I remember your post about crazy bosses. Line up your options and how you will get by before quoting any job

  2. You really wrote this out well. You have to think about whether it’s a short term bridge to something better or it’s a dead end road. It’s scary though!

  3. I have been there where you want something new so bad you end up making a lateral move (either pay or happiness wise) It’s important that as long as you are in a safe environment and aren’t being harassed that you make careful choices. Job hopping looks bad.
