In the day of social media and the internet, it can be hard unplugging from social media and to take a social media break. In fact we can be so consumed with social media that it literally takes our mind off what we are supposed to be thinking about. We forget to pray because we were too distracted by social media or we forget to go to church because we stayed up all night on social media.

Or now we have developed low self-esteem issues because you look at these build-a-bear women on social media and have gotten an unrealistic idea of what beauty is. Oh, and I am not perfect,  on any given day I am on my phone, watching TV, and on the computer ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

Sometimes we get so consumed by the internet and worrying about what is going on, on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter that we forget to actually live our lives. And most importantly we forget about our relationship with God. Which should be our primary focus.

As a Christian, I have learned that it is in the quiet places when you are still, and not consumed with the things around you that God can talk to you (see blog here) the MOST. Which is the main aspect of being a Christian. But so many of us are having trouble hearing God speak but the media we are listening to has drowned out the voice of God so we would much rather listen to media than listen to God.

But it is okay, I am not just going to list out the problem you know you have, but I want to SOLVE the problem for you. Well, I am not sure that I can cure your social media addiction in one post but I can certainly give you some suggestions. AND that is to completely and totally unplug. Also, check out my video below on why you need to socially distance yourself to get closer to God. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to my channel here.

#1 Taking A Social Media Break & Unplugging From Social Media ~ Go Camping or rent a Cabin

If you know for a fact that you will be tempted, then take the temptation away. It can be hard to get on social media and the internet if there is none to get one. Either way, when you do this do not just sit there like a bump on a log crying because you have nothing to do. Choose to actually camp, get in touch with nature, AND most importantly talk to God as you do it.

Think of it as going on a camping trip with God. I mean it sounds very corny BUT when you are out there and you have no one to talk to, then just choose to talk to God.  Going hiking or walking on the nature trail is a good time to talk to God and a good time to do a prayer walk (see my blog here).

And if you REALLY want to be extra, you should read the book of Genesis while you are in nature. You know the first few chapters where it talks about how God created the Earth. Maybe it is JUST me but when I am surrounded by nature I am in awe of how God created this perfect environment for humans to inhabit, the sun, moon, stars, day and night. All of it.  And it makes me feel that much closer to God.

#2 Taking A Social Media Break & Unplugging From Social Media ~  Spend Time In Meditation

You may be wondering how or even IF you should be meditating as a Christian. WELL. I want to answer your question in a nutshell:

This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. Joshua 1:8

Mediation as a Christian is NOT wrong, it just depends on what you are meditating on. And you should be meditating on the word of God.  I have read the Bible a couple of times BUT I am far from knowing everything that is in it and every time I read it I get something new from it. And that is the definition of meditation. Instead of looking at social media pick up the Bible and start reading it.

You will be amazed at how lost you can get in the world just by meditating on it. Not reading through it mindlessly but really reading it, understanding the words, and determining how the words actually apply to you.  You can check out my blog on how to read the Bible if you do not know where to start. But really you need to get to a quiet place with no distractions and just get lost in the word of God. Even after you read it, meditate on it and think about what it means.

#3 Taking A Social Media Break & Unplugging From Social Media ~ Journaling

I have a wonderful blog on how to write a letter to God which you can read here. When I first began to talk to God, God spoke to me so clearly through writing.  That is how I began to distinguish the word of God. Social media and the internet can convolute our emotions because someone else is always putting something on social media which effects our own thoughts.

Therefore, it is best for you to get rid of all of that. Write down what is concerning YOU and wait for God to respond. You may not be the best at it at first BUT the more you do it the better you will get. You can write down prayers, Bible verses, or anything you need to get started. An added bonus to this is that you can always come back and read it again and again for encouragement and inspiration.

#4 Taking A Social Media Break & Unplugging From Social Media  ~ Spend time with God.

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then you’re Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6

I do not feel that you literally need to go into a closet in pray.  I mean you can if you want but is not necessary.  The bigger point is to get to yourself without any people or distractions around you and just pray and talk to God, focus on building a relationship with Him. You need to find a place, a prayer room, a prayer corner, or somewhere that you can just sit before the Lord and spend time with him.

Remember this means take a social media break so you should not be in your prayer room with your phone vibrating and distracting you because of your incoming Facebook messages.  The point is to get clarity from God and to be there is a quiet place without distractions. You could make a practice of doing this on a regular basis.

Depending on how attached you are to social media you may not be ready to take a whole day. But simply, finding a prayer room and just taking some time (perhaps an hour or two) a day to spend time with God away from social media can benefit you in a big way. Also check out my video on how to hear from God.

#5 Taking A Social Media Break & Unplugging From Social Media ~ Pamper Yourself.

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.” Proverbs 31:10 (Also see my blog here)

The thing about rubies is that they are really pretty and shiny.  So if you want to consider yourself a ruby I see nothing wrong with taking care of yourself.  I HIGHLY encourage you to read my blog on Esther (click here). But the main thing about Esther is that even she herself went through beauty treatment to become queen:

Before a young woman’s turn came to go in to King Xerxes, she had to complete twelve months of beauty treatments prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics. And this is how she would go to the king. Esther 2:12-13 (NIV)

If it is good enough for Esther then it should be good enough for you.  Take time to pamper yourself and to take care of your temple. And before you go telling me that this has nothing to do with God, I am going to tell you the EXACT opposite. In my book for single moms (which you can click here to read about) I wrote this.

God warns us from becoming too obsessed with our looks, because looks are fading and they will not be with us forever. I do agree; I think that becoming OBSESSED with your looks and thinking that your looks are all you have to offer people is not what God wants. But as a Christian woman, I personally do not think that there is anything wrong with caring about your outside appearance.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. 1 Corinthians 6:19

What I am trying to say is that there is a difference between a well-kept, beautiful temple and one that is falling to the ground. The one that is beautiful says   I am valued, I am treasured, I want to look good for a long time, and I am aware of how I come across to the world.  If God thought so much as to sculpt every aspect of you, then why would you not think so much of yourself to take care of each aspect of you?

Taking A Social Media Break & Unplugging From Social Media ~ Final Thoughts

Taking a social media break and unplugging from social media can help you find your inner peace. What I am saying that you should take care of yourself and God wants you to take care of yourself. Don’t feel bad about that. Your body is a temple, right? So your mind as well take care of it. You can go to the spa, get a massage, or a facial.  It will help you relax and it is also good for your body.  You can also have a spa day at home (click here on my blog about how to have a spa day at home).
