Have you ever wondered about God’s punishment and if we deserve punishment by God? If God loves us then why on Earth would He want to punish us? And if you have heard the Bible verse that God punishes those whom He loves then you really may be confused. What type of love is God handing out if He is just sitting around punishing people?

And if you are in a place where you are sure that God is punishing you then I know for a fact that you are probably not feeling the love. You are probably sitting around feeling the opposite of loved and you just want to know WHY God is punishing you!

Maybe you did something small, maybe you did something major, and maybe you did something that is NO big deal but yet and still you are facing the wrath of God. This is why I am going to help you out and explain God’s punishment. Before we get into it I highly suggest you watch my video on when God turns His hand against you which talks about how God has punished those in the Bible. 1. God’s Punishment ~ Real Life Example Of Being Punished By God

I told you that I was going to explain God’s punishment and the punishment by God, in the best way I can and a way in which all of us humans can understand.  This is why I have started with a personal story of my own so that you can begin to correlate that God is a parent to us which is going to help you understand the punishment aspect. Since many of you are a mother or at least had a mother, then I know by starting off with this story to explain why God punishes us is something that most people should understand.

My son went behind my back and spent over $1000 in XBOX games in less than one month. I want you to think about that a little bit. If your child had spent $1000 of your hard-earned money on Xbox games how would you feel? You would probably feel like punishing him right?

Because you would be angry? Because the child did something he was not supposed to do? Or perhaps you want to punish the child so that he won’t do it again. Whatever your reasons, I need you to keep these reasons in your head because it is going to help explain God’s punishment.

When I found out about my son spending my money,  some would say he did it by accident.  I know better than that.  My son went to great lengths to cover up his lie.  After playing the games, he deleted them so I would not see them. This brings me to my next point that I want you to keep in your mind before I move on to why does God punish us.  My son tried to cover up his crime, he could have even said it was by accident, but I knew my son’s heart. I knew it was intentional.

How Does This Relate To The Punishment By God That We Get?

As I told you this story about my son I wanted to use this story as a metaphor.  That the parents or the mom is like God and the child is like us.  Which is why I asked you to answer these three questions so you can start to get into what goes through God’s mind as He punishes us? When did I tell you my son spent $1,000 on XBOX games how did you feel?

  • Would you be angry if your child did this?
  • And if so, why would you punish them?
  • And how would you punish them?

These are the exact questions that go through God’s mind when He sees us doing something we are not supposed to do. The second point in which my son went through great measures to cover up his crime is also something that I want you to consider. Because when we have done something how many of us are the same way with God.

We do something that we know we have no business doing, we try to hide it from God knowing God knows everything, and then we are somehow shocked when God finds out about our wrongdoing and then punishes us for it. We want to play innocent like we did nothing wrong. When just like I knew the intent behind my son’s actions in spending my money, God knows the intent behind what we do. He knows if we meant to harm and He knows what is in our heart. Which is also things that God takes into consideration when He punishes us.

2. God’s Punishment ~ The Punishment By God Happens So We Won’t Do It Again

When I thought about how to punish my son I came up with the worst possible punishment that I could give him. The reason why I HAD to punish him was so that my son knew to never spend money out of my account again. I knew if the punishment was too light, he really would not have learned his lesson, he would possibly do it again.

And if I did not punish my son, then there is a large possibility that he would grow up taking money from other people because he was never punished for the times where he took money from me. So in his mind, he can rationalize that taking money is okay. BUT in order for him to learn his lesson, the punishment had to be severe and memorable. In fact, God punished his chosen people the Israelites in the midst of the wilderness a lot.  You can watch my video below for more on that.

Punishment By God ~ What’s my point?

It is the same way with God. He must punish us for our own sake, to keep us honest and so that we understand not to satisfy our flesh with the temporary rewards of the world.  God sets rules in place for a reason.  Those reasons are to keep the world from being a chaotic place. Imagine if God never punished us, we would be going around doing what we wanted to do hurting ourselves and other people in the process.  God punishes us to teach us a lesson and He punishes us to keep us from making the same mistake over and over again. He punishes us for our own good.

3. God’s Punishment ~ Punishment By God Does Not Mean God Does Not Love Us

Just because  I HAD to punish my son, I felt really bad for him.  No “normal” parent wants to punish or hurt their child, but I HAD to. And just because I punished my son does not mean I do not love him, it does not mean that I have some vendetta against him and I somehow take the enjoyment out of taking things away from him. When I punished my son I did not want to do it. I would much rather he behave and me not have $1000 missing from my account and no go through the pain of being the bad guy to my child.

Punishment By God ~ What’s my point?

God is not waiting around until you screw up so that He can just punish you for His own personal enjoyment.  And just because God punishes you does not mean He does not love you, it does not mean that He wants to punish you, and it does not mean that He likes making you suffer.  He does it because he has to and He does it out of love.

My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Hebrews 12:6

4. God’s Punishment ~ If You Are Not Getting Punishment By God You Should Be Worried

Imagine if I was to just let my son steal $1000 from me and walk around like I did not care. If I did not say anything to my son, do anything to my son, and I just went about my business like what my son did, did not matter. What type of parent would you see me as? Probably a mother who just lets her child run around doing whatever he wants to do. You would probably see me as a bad mother whose son is going to grow up to be a criminal.

Now imagine this, how many times have you been out and about and you have seen someone else’s child doing something wrong or acting like a crazy person in public. I can almost bet that you really did not say anything because that is someone else’s child. It is their responsibility to get their child in line and not yours.

Punishment By God ~ What’s my point

There are two points that I want to make here.

  • The first lesson to take about God’s punishment is that if God is not disciplining you then you should be worried. In the first example, I ask you to judge me as a mother if I was just letting my child do whatever without any form of punishment. It would be the same way with God. If He was out here just letting you run around doing whatever you want then what type of father would He be? Not a very good one.  And what type of person would you grow into be if you have a bad father?
  • The second point  you can take when you are facing punishment by God is to remember if you were just out here acting out and God was ignoring you then He may be saying to Himself “that is not my child acting out, and therefore it is not my problem.” Which is once again something that you do not want.  If God is not paying you any attention then that means you are not his child.

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?  If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Hebrews 12:7-8

I hope that this gives you a better understanding God’s punishment and the punishment by God that we seem to get all the time.  And in case you are wondering as for my son if he ever decides to steal again then there is going to be hell to pay. And as for you, understand that God punishing us is not to hurt us but to teach us.

  1. He is such a good Father. I know recently I recieved a punishment that I know came from God and somewhere in me I smiled bc i deserved it and it showed me how merciful he is and was keeping me from later troubles.

  2. The story of your son made me wince. $1100 wow! But excellent takeaway. We always have to remind ourselves that God’s heart is always good for us and it’s out of that love that he disciplines us, because not to, is not love at all. Thanks!
